Energy Studies

01/2013 - 06/2020, Carpe Futurum Power Generation, Uppsala, Sweden

Client: Vattenfall

B-P works: Buchhorn-Projects set up the concept and calculated the water/steam circuit to optimise process parameters of the new 100 MW BtE plant, allowing for later modification from heant-only to CHP plant. Finally, Buchhorn-Projects  prepared the technical part of the ITT for the future extension of Carpe by a turbine.

Conversion of existing HVC from peat to pellets

Fuel: Wood pellets and bio oil, 132 MW by 4 out of 5 burners

B-P works: Process engineering, technical specifications, technical tender evaluation and negotiation, review of Contractor´s design, general support to Vattenfall.

B-P works: Project Manager Incineration & BoilerConceptual design, technical specifications for incineration and boiler, Tender evaluation. The "Groene Weide"  has not been realised as Nuon sold plant and project.

Fuel: 20 t/h Dutch B-wood (German A3), 73 MW

Steam: 80 t/h, 68 bar, 465°C

08/2011 - 10/2011, 1st maintenance stop of 5th line, Dordrecht, Netherlands

Client: NV Huisvuilcentrale / RG-Projecten bv

B-P works: Stop Manager, responsible for the team (6 experts), planning, costs and quality. Time to organise was 7 weeks and stop lasted 6 weeks. 42 Contractors and 394 persons involved, 1579 h/d peak workload, zero accidents.

Fuel: 30 t/h MSW, 75 MW

B-P works: As Project Manager Process responsibility for main process. Technical concept, heat & mass balances, cost estimate, contributions to environmental permit, technical specifications, tender evaluation and negotiation, control of Contractor´s works, coordination of commissioning, trial run and tests.

Client: City of Beijing / KfW

Place of work: Beijing

B-P works: During the initial phase of the project, advice to KfW (German Development Bank) and support to Administration of Beijing to finalise Feasibility Study, Environmental Impact Assessment and Terms of Reference for the Implementation Consultant. The 1000 t/d plant Nangong went in operation in 2017.

As Project Manager Process Mr. Buchhorn controlled Contractor´s works to ensure the process being in line with the contract, check of costs, planning, quality, coordination with ongoing operation, control of commissioning, trial run, tests and project handover.

7 pre-treatment & composting and  2 incineration plants

Total capacity: 2,500,000 tons MSW / year.

1990 - 1999, Project Manager Waste-to-Energy

At L.& C. Steinmüller GmbH Mr. Buchhorn was Project Manager in the department Project & Sales Waste-to-Energy. Most projects were turn-key plants. As from 1994 he was deputy head of the department.
